I'll weigh in. I became a Squire a while ago. Although I'm probably too old
and fat now to ever reach the Knightly level of powess, and spend my field
time primarily as a Marshall and Chirurgeon, I still consider myself a
Squire. Having been one, now, for about 25 of my 32 years as a SCAdian, I
figure that I can dust off an old-fart memory or two.

In the waning days of Atlantia's Principality status, and her dawn as a
Kingdom, it was a given that Squires would learn the Corpora-listed minimum
of artsy things -- at least. If a Squire never got past Horse's Bransle or
Toss the Duchess, he or she still danced. Even if it was only drinking
songs while scrubbing dishes, a Squire sang. We were expected to at least
know the basics of Heraldry, and the moves of chess.

I've pretty much got all the cookies I'm ever likely to get, and will most
likely remain, as my Knight says, the Eternal Sergeant. I can still dance
and sing. With a bit of practice, I can get back to playing recorder. I'm
not a great, even a good chess player -- but I know HOW to play chess. I
also know enough about heraldry to get most of the really bad puns, and the
jokes in a lot of late-1970s SCA heraldry.

Bottom line -- I doubt I'll ever be a Peer myself. However, the ancillary
stuff, in addition to the major field of endeavor, is something that all
SCAdians, and especially all Peers, need to have at least a nodding
acquaintance with.
