[MR] KASF - commentary - Art and passion(long)

I agree with this one... if there's something that can keep my non-artisan
sweetie amused without him being in my hair all day, so I can geek out with
all the wonderful artisans, I'm all for it. He's happy, I'm happy, and we
get to spend time together on the drive to and from the event. Normally, at
an event, we tend to go our separate ways anyhow... him to the rapier field,
me to the A&S or to our tent to sit and play with string.
I also recall several years ago (I believe HRM Ragnarr was king at the
time), there was a small fighter practice at KASF up in Virginia. At some
point during the practice, the fighters were given a break and encouraged to
come inside and see the displays, entries, demos, etc. It was really nice,
as a demonstrating artisan, to have the fighters come up and ask what I was
doing. They spent about an hour or two doing this, then took their sweaty
selves back outside to pound on one another once more.
I thought it was very nice, that they made an effort to recognize that the
A&S WAS the focus of the day, and to give it the respect it was due as such.
I don't mind a fighter practice at KASF, if it means that more people will
show up to support the event, and that our significant others who fight will
be kept busy and out from under foot, so we can enjoy the company of other
artisans whose main goal for the day is to do the same.
My two pence,
Oddny

The only two cents I will put in here is that I personally don't see
an issue with the fighting. As an "inside arts" artisan who has many
many friends who are "outside artisans". I see no problem with me
doing my thing and allowing them the same courtesy. The fact that it
is labeled as the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Festival pretty much says
what's the main focus of the day. If it means that folks come and
fight, that's cool... I'm not there for them, they're not here for me.
I'm here for the ART and Sciences of the middle ages for the things I
love... to be honest, if my family can find something to do while I'm
having my fun then I'm more likely to come back to a particular event.
If that means fighting, then let 'em fight.
