Let me second Gise's comments and note that perhaps she should not have
urged the organizers of the event to return it to the previously scheduled
agenda because it appears that the decision to add fighting to the event was
not their decision.

The posted messages made it appear that the training scheduled was not run
by the autocrats and that most of the fighters of the kingdom, the list
officers and above all the folks in charge of running the event found out
about it when most of us did through a post to the Merry Rose and then
scrambled to accommodate the fighters on very short notice.

If that is not the case, I apologize to the folks organizing these military
maneuvers.

If it is the case, then I grieve that, with the best intentions in the
world, our "brave fighters" have been led astray into such an unchivalrous
breech of courtesy towards the autocrats who have to add a major activity
which may or may not be an approved activity under the contract for that
particular site, the list officers who have had to rework their plans on
such short notice, the artists and artisans who have been sent the message
that their best work is not enough to allow the event to stand on its own
without armed combat and the fighters who might have been happy to plan on
attending such a war practice with enough advance notice but now find
themselves forced to miss something they would have enjoyed because they
have other commitments.

been expressed.

My good Lord Vels,

There is no disrespect directed toward the good fighters of Atlantia and I
do not believe this is a jaded view at all. It is simply a different view.

I do not disagree with you in anyway that the various fighting individuals
and units of Atlantia must needs have more time training in unit tactics
and
specific battle strategies. They must learn to work with complete strangers
in
seamless unison. In order to accomplish this, they must have time together,

specific to this sort of training. I am originally from the East and we have
a
strong tradition of war camps . . . which I have been on staff of and have

autocratted. I am not a fighter, but I support the military activities of
the
SCA happily.

I have had conversations about how to accomplish such training with several

military folks in this kingdom such as Duke Logan. I have offered to
organize
fighting practices here in Sacred Stone for any and all. This is an offer
that stands. I swear that I will gladly organize practices or autocrat war
camps
or help others make happen. This is an important thing that I will support
with all my abilities.

I think the issues raised by the others, however, are as valid. I do not
accept the idea that any event, once large enough, must have fighting
attached
to it. I believe there is time and interest enough that one event in an
entire
year can be held for the celebration of and concentration on the Arts &
Sciences of the SCA.

While I fully accept that military activities can be an art and a science,
I
do not accept that they are part of the A&S tradition of the SCA. Attaching

military activities to this event is a concern for me and I am not a A&S
person.

The arrangements are made for this year and I'm sure we will all support
the
event and the decisions made. However, I would encourage the organizers and

the kingdom officers and leadership to return the event to A&S centric only

in the future. The artisans of this kingdom, many of whom are also involved
in
marital activities and cannot be in two places at once on any given day,
deserve one event.

That's all folks are saying or asking for, m'lord. No more. No less. And my

offer is real and sincere. I will work with anyone who wishes to create a
series of war camps or practices. This is not an Us Against Them discussion
in
any way.

In all sincerity and supplication,

~Herrin Gisela vom Kreuzbach
