Forsooth, Dame Olwen, your words ring true.

I would take it farther than that, though. No need to stop at Royalty. We are all nobles, are we not? Let us all, then, endeavor to whatever extent we can, to purge from our speech those terms and expressions that make our speech modern.

Time was, many amongst us set great store by what was called "speaking forsoothly." This usually meant attempting to sound like the characters in Sir Thomas Malory's tales, and it was sometimes successful and sometimes amusing.

I do not advocate going to that extent. But if we all follow Dame Olwen's admonitions and try to adopt patterns of speech that have at least the impression of Mediaeval speakers (whom we would have difficulty understanding if we could actually hear them), it will add in no little way to the ambience of our events.

Your servant aye
Donal

This is at least the second response that I have read to this thread. In
neither have I seen a mention of one thing that means a lot to me, the
spoken word being more IN period than OUT of period. I really irks me to
hear a Queen or a King sitting on the thorne saying things like "Oh cool!"
or "you really work your butt off" or "WOW!". It just kind of loses some of
the magic of the moment. I don't expect the Crown to brush up on old
english, but learning to leave out the modern slang and terms would be a
great start. At least for me.

Dame Olwen the Odd
