Greetings from Duke Richard Fitzgilbert!
These are all good qualities for a Queen. Here are some you might not think
of:
Good conflict resolution skills: You'd be surprised at how many people
bring problems to the Queen but not to the King.
An understanding of the inner workings of the SCA: Not just the rules and
regulations but how things really work.
A sense of how every little thing the royalty does gets magnified beyond all
reason. The slightest negative word can crush someone's soul and a tiny bit
of encouragement can set someone on the path to a peerage.
A belief in the power of leadership be example, there is no better platform
to lead by example than the thrones. "Do as I say and not as I do" does not
work in the SCA.
A willingness to let other people serve you in the ways they want to. This
is difficult balancing act, many royals are uncomfortable letting people do
things for them and at the same time some royals end up demanding too much
from some.
Royals should approach their reign as a six month opportunity for them to
serve the kingdom not as an opportunity for the kingdom to serve them. It
has been described it as an opportunity to play host to several hundred of
your closest friends.
I told myself I wouldn't go on and on....

Diccon

Subject: Re: [MR] expectations (Logan)
Here is one perspective to answer Duke Logan's question:
"during a conversation recently the subject of expectations came up. so, I
was curious to know what other people thought about the topic: "what do you
look for or expect from a queen" meaning if you could design a queen what
would you desire. regards logan "
Remember, he did ask. This is a humble opinion.
Having only been in the Kingdom of Atlantia for a few years, placing an
Atlantian Queen's name with the query is difficult. From what has been seen
and heard of Her Queens, Atlantia has been fortunate to have a number whose
nature have contributed some of the tremendous qualities of a Queen.
What could a Queen be like? What would be Queenly? If . . .
. . . She would portray all the regalness of true Royalty even when
stooping to help the
fallen.
. . . She would show compassion and genuineness to all People.
. . . She would offer a sympathetic ear without judgement.
. . . She would offer a helping hand without snobbishness.
. . . She would dress the part.
. . . She would be benevolent.
. . . She would be a role model for All, especially our Youth.
and specifically to the SCA . . .
She should arrive at Troll, step into garb for the full event and lead the
Dream by example the entire Event- for the Populace, our Fair Atlantia and
the whole of the SCA.
That would be Queenly.
And yet, does this not pertain to a King as well? Let us ponder.
The King and Queen, as well as countless others, portray who and what is
the Kingdom of Atlantia. From behavior, to travel and even in photographs,
it is work. But it is good work and good times rewarded by what is perceived
and appreciated by all.
That would be Royal.
That would apply to all of us. Would that be The Dream? Yes. It would.
The question can now be reversed to ask the same of what a King or Queen
Combatant may seek in a Consort.
Yours in Service,
Alexandra
