I was once stopped by the beagle at Dulles Airport. After a bunch of 
searching we figured out that I had carried an orange in my briefcase 
for an hour or two the previous day, and the dog probably smelled it.

Of course, he might have been homing on my pepper mill. Pepper is 
sometimes used to mask odors. Gasoline also works, as does 
methylnonoketone, used in pellets and sprays to keep animals off the 
shrubbery. When neighborhood dogs were raiding garbage cans, I used 
diesel fuel (about a cup per can). A neighbor used old painters rags 
soaked in turpentine.
