Rather, the author uses the saga-mentions of Gudrid to piece together a
picture of what we know (and what she supposes, although she's very careful
to delineate the differences) about what one particular woman *may* have
experienced in her life. This gives her a vehicle to point out other
interesting facts about Viking-era women and their men.

It was a good read but more like a written lecture than like a book.
