I have just finished the illumination for a small, non-armigerous Opal scroll. The details are as follows:
Size- 5 1/4 inches X 6 1/8 inches
Materials- Vellum, period pigments (Medium vermillion, synthetic ultramarine, Italian golden ochre (in place of shell gold or gold leaf, both too expensive for my use at this time, and I don't have gilding experience), white lead ceruse), sumi ink for outlining (the lamp black spread too much, and requires more tweaking for good use)
Illumination- I plan to draw out full documentation for the scroll, once I hear back from the library where the base scroll is housed. What I do know is that it is early 15th century (1400's), from a Parisian breviary. The initial is of my own design, based on Gothic initials of the time.
Calligraphy- The calligraphy for this scroll will be done by Lord Enequy Erensaurlezelasgarria in Batarde, which is an appropriate hand used for many French manuscripts of that time, and only slightly differs from the original.
Design - The design of this scroll is a single illuminated initial, with a bar on each side of the text and leafy vines of the Gothic style coming off the bars. On the bottom is the badge, and on either side of it, the vine extends into the tail of two Spikes. The colours are red, blue, and 'gold' yellow, with whitework.
As this is my first scroll done with period paints, and only my third attempt at whitework, it is not a 'perfect' scroll, but it is a beautiful Opal scroll, I think, and would be great for anyone's backlog scroll.
Only things 'wrong' with it are the size (I like the size personally, but some people would find it too small...it is only slightly larger than the manuscript pages of the times) and that it is not perfect. Also, since it is an experimental scroll, I don't know what effects lighting and moisture will have on the paints in the future, but I would love to keep in touch with the recepient to document the changes to the paints, if any.
So, if anyone is interested in this scroll, feel free to e-mail me with information about your backlog scroll, as well as a bit of information about your persona (I'd like to give the scroll to someone whose persona fits the early 15th century French design of the scroll. You -must- be able to show that you have your name registered, and your scroll -must- be available for assignment according to the backlog. As this is a non-armigerous Opal, I will not be able to give it to a recipient of an armigerous Opal award (meaning you got your AoA with the Opal). But you do not have to have heraldry registered for me to do your backlog scroll. Take note, this scroll has not been callig'd yet, but will be at Sacred Stone Baronial Birthday if we have a recipient. You may even be able to receive the scroll there, if you are going to attend.
Looking forward to hearing from potential recipients of this original scroll.
Vivat the Dream,
