There are simple solutions to Their Majesties' request:
1 - Some groups will already be used to over-cooking their feasts and the
four or less (figuring a standard High Table of 8) who may or may not be
registered for feast will be absorbed in the overage.
2 - Some groups will scramble to re-write their Financial Policy as per
Their Highness' request and deal with the knotty money accounting as it
comes up.
3 - Some groups will have individual members who will note how much a feast
costs and leave envelopes at the Troll with that much cash (or cheque) in
them to be used "if needed" in order to cover the cost.
4 - Some groups will have members of the populous register for feast as soon
as that member is invited to High Table by Their Majesties.
What we as 'private individuals' can do is adopt tactic number 3. It is what
I plan on doing - and the idea of hosting some penny-game fun nights at my
house in order to include my friends in the joy of "in case of emergency"
donating is making me smile. Who knows? The money may never be needed,
considering the set-up - how often is someone invited to High Table who
hasn't registered for feast? They have to say "yes" first, remember! And
then decide that they are not going to pay for their meal. Only then would
the donation be needed. If it's not needed, then it is just available for
the next event I attend...
Simple. No group is harmed. No Troll or cook need tear their hair out. No
long drawn-out escalating Internet exchanges.
Problem solving is fun,
Hrothny
