My Lords and Ladies,
Firstly please pardon me if you get this message more than once. It's
very important that it get out to as many folk as possible. If you know
of someone who might be interested, please feel free to share this with
them.
The Known World Players are proud to announce their most ambitious
project to date for Pennsic 2007: a selection of ten to twelve plays
from the Wakefield Cycle, to be performed in an authentic medieval
style. Groups from around the Known World are invited to join this
project. The Known World Players still have a few slots left, so select
a play from the Cycle and join in the fun at War!
The Wakefield Cycle is one of four complete or nearly complete cycles of
English mystery plays that still exist today. Mystery plays are short
dramas that each tell one important Bible story or episode, and a full
Cycle takes the audience from the Creation of the World through the
birth and crucifixion of Christ to the Last Judgment. The mystery plays
were vital to the Catholic Church for transmitting its values and
beliefs to an audience that in most cases could not (and was not allowed
to) read the Bible. They were wildly popular in period, when one to
three days might be devoted to performing a Cycle.
The Players are looking for groups to sponsor and perform the various
plays. They would love groups from Kingdoms all over the Known World to
participate in this one-of-a-kind opportunity at Pennsic War. Do what
the medieval guilds did: Grab a group of willing volunteers, select a
play and a director, rehearse at home, then bring your play to Pennsic!
Each play is only 15-20 minutes long. The Known World Players will
provide scenery and help with music – you provide your own costumes. SCA
groups, households, guilds, and other organizations can also “sponsor” a
play by making a donation towards the efforts of an existing “Players’
Guild.”
To volunteer a group to sponsor and perform a play, to donate money
towards the building of the stages, or simply to get more information
and become involved with the Known World Players, please contact Sofia
at zsofsky AT gmail.com.
Thanks for taking the time to read and consider this information...and
for any help you can provide!
