Isolda's made some good points about technicalities of carrying,
particularly with regard to the frequency with which SCA events are held in
"Gun-Free" (blech) areas. However, even in no-steel zones, I suspect a bunch
of SCA fighters with chair-and table-legs would be sufficient for anything
short of a Beslan scenario.
Rather than make it mandatory that youth-activity people get CHPs, I would
suggest that it might be a money-saver to let a CHP serve as proof of an
existing-and-current background check. For example, I've already spent the
$50 for a Virginia CHP (gotta renew this summer), and the $20 for a PA
permit (don't need to renew, again, we have reciprocity now).
I've found that permits and whatnot provide for some amusing repartee, with
people of a certain temperament. These folk, when they find out that I have
everything from a 14th C hande-gonne [ObPeriodReference], up to an Evil
Black Rifle(tm) say something like,
"It makes me uncomfortable to know that I'm in the presence of a Gun Nut",
or words to that effect.
My response usually leaves them crosseyed.
"Well, I'm not necessarily comfortable around YOU. How do I know you're not
a psycho?"
"But-but-but, I'n not."
"Really? How many background checks have you passed in the last 10-12
years?"
"None -- I don't do any of that government stuff..."
[add evil grin as appropriate] "Oh, really? You DON'T have proof that you're
reasonably law-abiding and mentally stable? In the past 12 years, _I_'ve
passed [counting on fingers] somewhere between twenty-five, and thirty
background checks. So there. Nyah."
It's fun, watching their heads explode.
