I would also point out that children can be at risk from people who have
nothing whatsoever to do with organized minors' activities. Background
checks are not a panacea. Parents need to do their jobs and not expect the
SCA to be their babysitter. When my kids were young, I didn't leave them at
children's activities. I stayed there with them all day. Was that a pain
in the neck? Yes. But it was my job, my first and most important job.
BTW, my son authorized in both heavy combat and rapier at 17, when he was,
strictly speaking, a minor. As we do allow minors to authorize, do we also
have to do background checks for every marshal on the field?
I'm with Axel on this one. Though I'll put in money to pay for the checks
if necessary - I certainly don't want our volunteers being hit up for this!
