Two hunters, their heavy breath blowing cloudy before them in the morning chill, stood over their prey. The run had been long, but in the end, the youngster never had a chance. One of the two men, marked by the token around his neck as a Dragoon, was shuffling through the pockets of the fallen. The boy had been alone, and this far out that meant he had to be a messenger of sorts. Though the pockets and pouches were empty, the Dragoon did find a letter stuffed inside the boot of the boy.
Examining the letter, the Dragoon notices that the seal, a counterchanged pattern pressed into wax, matches the blue and white counterchanged garters that were still wrapped around the legs of the fallen messenger. The Dragoon stared at the garters, frowning; why did they look so familiar? Finally, shrugging, he opened the letter, and read the script aloud:
Your Majesty,
I send news from the town of Smeewick. The Northern Threat has once again encroached on your borders and has already siezed Smeewick as its own. They seem better organized this year than in previous years, and have already begun to fortify the town, apparently to use as a staging area for supplies. God's grace shown on us, though, as several members of the Gardiner's Companie were drilling in the area. We've managed to gather most of the fighting age men from the village, but we haven't near enough numbers to retake it.
However, that does not mean we are sitting idlely by. Each opportunity we have we are striking at the enemy. Indeed, just yesterday we brought down their commander and his deputy. To be honest, I had hoped that this would rattle the enemy, but they seem to have found a new Captain rather quickly. We will continue to harass the enemy where we can, and will certainly work to disrupt their supply lines.
While we certainly will give our all in service to our Kingdom, we can not hold out much past summer. Our own supplies are limited, and we just don't have the manpower to sustain our actions. I beg You to consider our situation and send what forces You find wise to support us. In the meantime, know that your people will not abandon hope, and your forces will not forget their duty.
We stand vigilant,
Master Alan Gravesend
p.s. Lord Giacomo Vincenti insists that I relay his best wishes.
The Dragoon paled, and looked up at his companion, a soldier on his first campaign, who asked "What is wrong?"
The Dragoon simply said, simply, quietly, "Giacomo Vincenti".
The rookie snorted and smiled, "Who the hell is Giacomo Vincenti?"
>From behind them, a merry voice said "I am."

The tavern, empty save for Celric and a very nervous Sergeant, is well lit, even though the sun has finally dropped behind the trees surrounding the town. "What do you mean," Celric asks, leaning back into his chair, "when you say they are 'missing'?"
