As a middle school teacher, I approve of background checks. No, it does not completely solve the problem, but it sure helps. It makes me sick every time I see a news story about a teacher, youth leader or some other authority who has abused children in some way. We are trusted in these positions to educate, protect and ensure the safety of our charges. Schools take it so seriously that if you don't report suspected abuse, you will be fired. As for the cost, I agree that it's worth putting in the money to have some level of protection. Dame Olwen had an excellent idea about an auction or fundraiser. I would certainly contribute and I'm sure others would as well. I'm not a parent, but I believe in making it as difficult as possible for predators to have an avenue to children. Predators of children OR women are despicable and not fit for this world. Let's do all we can to make sure we, as a society, protect each other and our loved ones.
