Leaving aside all else for the moment, I know there
was considerable disappointment in this particular
case that the Order wasn't informed simply because
many of us would have liked to BE THERE to welcome a
new member to the Order. It's not merely a question
of keeping a secret from the candidate, but also
giving the members of the Order a chance to plan to be
there.
(And before anyone says "but but but you should BE
THERE for Coronation!" ... yes, perhaps, but some of
us also have obligations and interests outside the
SCA, travel is a concern, and so on. In my own case,
I probably wouldn't have been able to make Coronation
under any circumstances. Other people may have been
able to arrange something had they had a little
forewarning.)
Speaking of my own elevation, I nearly missed it; I'd
been ill the week before the event, my husband had
just gotten back from Estrella, and we came within the
proverbial inches of saying "aw, let's just chuck this
one." If one of the "handlers" of the elevation
hadn't had the prescience to get me to promise to help
with something, I would have skipped, because neither
I nor my husband had any idea I was supposed to be
there for anything else. Silly me and my sense of
obligation to keep my word. *grins*
