I have received a few awards, though nothing so nice as a peerage, and I have
been both surprised during court and made aware of it beforehand. It sometimes
gets difficult keeping things from your court herald without advance planning
when you want to give her or him an award!
In all cases, it was a wonderful surprise, whether I found out before or during
court, and the court experience was still great when I knew beforehand. OTOH, I
know from mundane and SCA experience that the 'surprise' can be ruined when the
recipient is stopped in the middle of something to be surprised & their main
concern is what they were doing.
