Dear AIA Local Society contacts,
Yesterday I attended a press preview for a new exhibition at the Asia
Society, called Gilded Splendor. It is about the Liao Empire--nomadic
people who took over much of northern China around A.D. 1000. It has
about 200 objects--some amazing ones from the tomb of Princess
Chen--and the artifacts are all excavated from sites in Inner
Mongolia (not like some recent China exhibitions with lots of objects
lacking any sort of provenance). Something like 40 of the artifacts
have been declared "national treasures" by China and most have never
been seen in North America (many never before seen outside of China).
It's a great exhibition, but it only runs until December 31st, then
moves on to Europe. You should bring this to the attention of your
society members--they won't want to miss it. Have a look at
www.asiasociety.org/arts/liao for more, including virtual tours of
some tombs. The exhibit officially opens tomorrow.
Groups are very welcome says Nancy Blume, the head of arts education
for Asia Society. She runs group tours and can be reached at
nancyb at asiasociety.org or 212-327-9237.
