I think events have always been as exciting as you
make them. If you limit yourself to one type of
activity when that activity is not happening you will
be bored. If you involve yourself in multiple types
of activity and service your chances of fun at events
increases exponentially.
It is always good to get feedback about how to make
events more exciting. I have heard several people
complain about how boring events can be. But then
they don't have any suggestions about how to make them
better. This is simple whining which I ignore.
When my local friends complain about how boring an
event is, I also note that they've spent the whole day
sitting with the same group they see all week. When I
go to events it's not just to take part of the
activities offered, it's to meet with people, pick
brains about current interests, offer my knowledge and
hopefully make more friends.
I've often had people come to me and say "how come you
went up there and didn't have time for us". When I
travel 7 hours I'm interested in bringing local
friends along but I'm also interested in meeting new
people and visting with people I don't usually get to
see.
I'm interested in putting faces with the names in
email addresses and getting to know my email buddies
on a personal level. When I started taking this
approach to eventing more than a decade ago I stopped
being bored at events. And met some of the most
wonderful people who have given me new hobbies and new
ways of looking at issues I never thought about
before.
My goal now is to meet one new person at every event.
This makes events as exciting for me as the activities
offered.

Course now that I'm involved in a specific job I spend
a ton of time also reading documentation. <grin>
