Emailing the autocrat that your are planning to come to an event is a good
idea. When I autocrated Assessment in June, I received lots of emails from
people who were thinking about coming.
Most of those that emailed, did also come to the event. This helped a lot in
planning out available space and definitely the usage of Porta-Js, which are
very expensive by the way.
The important thing to remember for the autocrat is just to let people know
that they are not officially registered until the pre-req check has been
received. That's especially important for things like feast.
Another important thing about pre-req is that besides smaller groups who
need the money, bigger groups will think twice about things like Feast if
there are not enough pre-reqs. Refunds really should not be a problem since
they can all be written soon after the event.
Many events offer incentives like lower prices for pre-reqing. Since it is
so important, what other incentives are people using?
Good rule of thumb- Autocrats need as much info as possible to be able to
organize the most out of their events. So if you're planning on going- you
should pre-req. If you're a 'maybe' still let them know.

I think it's a good idea, except for one small issue. Many of the
smaller groups depend on the mnoey for pre-regs to fund their events.
An email does very little to fatten the coffers for things that must
be paid for prior to arrival (such as porta-castles).
If you're even thinking you might want to go, why not pre-reg or ask
the autocrat what the refund policy is for that group? If it's
liberal enough, you may be able to pre-reg and if you ned up not
going, request a refund.
Yes, it's an extra step; but your cash might help an event get off the
ground. You never know.
