I must say that I agree with Duke Logan that these rules, without reason for being added pose more of a problem than they do adding safety to our game. For one, they could in effect cause a false sense of safety in a game that is not intended to be completely safe. Another is that adding rules that are unnecessary will only make it harder for newcomers to get started, and seasoned fighters the frustration of having to change what they have been doing for countless numbers of years, for no reason at all. There have been fighters for decades in the SCA that are still fighting today that have not worn 1/4" padding around the aventail or rigid elbow protection behind the shield, and have not been hurt due to not wearing these new "protective" items. What's the point in adding it now?
And as for Duke Logan or any other marshal resigning because of these unnecessary additions, that would be tragic, but it may be just what it will take for the SEM to look again at what he is inflicting on the populace he was appointed to serve. Image for a moment that Duke Logan (with 15 years of marshal and fighting experience) and 3 or 4 dozen more marshals throughout the Knowne World suddenly resign due to these rules, the SEM will certainly take notice and maybe even take a step back and listen to what the populace he was appointed to serve are saying to him. Although I would certainly hate to see that happen, I have no doubt that it would get both the SEM and BODs attention.
Just my humble opinion,
Lord Sebastien de Valmont
A mediocre heavy fighter, trying to get better at this game we all love!
