My fear with an email to say you are coming would be the possibility for 
confusion.  Often enough both autocrats and reservationists receive emails 
from people telling us they are coming and they fully believe that they are 
now reserved.  Then we politely explain that
"the only reservation is a paid reservation" and give them the info to send 
the reservation in.

To then ask for those attending to email us if they are unable to pre-reg 
and let us know that they are hoping/planning to come could lead to 
confusion. I can easily see someone misinterpreting that as an alternative 
to pre-reg and then assuming that their email would hold cabin space/feast 
space for them and then finding out at the gate that it did not.

My fear would be that you would end up with many disappointed people, and no 
event wants that to happen.
