[MR] the real petitions are now online

thanks amy. we tried that. now we are going with sheer numbers which, i
suspect, will also be ignored. and not just atlantians, but fighters from
every kingdom. but lets face it, many people are either too lazy to write
or intimidated by the prospect, or unsure what to say. i have over 150
opinions from 18 of 19 kingdoms that agree that these new rules are without
any merit and add nothing to our sport.

i don't like form letters or petitions either. however, in this case we are
left with this. our voices were to be carried by our kingdom earl marshals.
a few agreed with the society earl marshals personal opinions on this. most
said nothing. so, this was not a complete act by fiat but, so it seems, one
of complacent disregard by our representatives. so its up to those of us
that are effected by this and those that support us. hoping that 300 people
will take the time to express their opinions is folly. most fighters will
ignore these silly rules and most marshals will ignore them or be too inept
to enforce them. but getting 2000 people to sign a petition is a wee bit
easier and a lot harder for the sem to ignore.

will he ignore it? well, if there is enough support for it only his pride
will stand in his way. he has no injury reports to back it up and no cry
from the people to create it. its not so simple as you might think and this
is a debate that has been hot and increasing since the announcement was made
some weeks ago.

certainly everyone that support the removal of this new rule should write a
letter to the sem. they should also sign the petition(s). feel free not to
as well.

regards
logan

It is my experience that, even in the SCA, if one takes the time to write
their own opinion in their own voice on a matter, it is taken with more
weight than if one signs a petition... particularly an electronic petition.
I heartily suggest that if people feel strongly about this (or any other)
matter they write with their own voice to the board. 300 people taking less
than a minute (literally) to sign an online or even physical petition does
not carry the same weight as 300 seperate letters stating a position against
or for a change.

The SCA Board is always looking for comments and suggestions and welcomes
them.
