Greetings to the list,

Below are the tourney descriptions, as well as prizes, for Dun Carraig's
Baronial Birthday this Saturday. I hope those who fight with rattan or with
rapier, those who shoot, and those who throw will join us for a glorious day
of martial activities (and, in the spirit of the event, a good dose of
silliness and cheer).

Prizes for each tourney are customarily provided by the outgoing baronial
champion in that activity.

Armored - A purse filled with gold will be awarded to the winner.

Thrown Weapons - As the barony is currently without a thrown weapons
champion, the prize is a dagger donated by Mistress Kiri, with a sheath made
by Matthew of Summerdale, the barony's newest thrower of sharp, pointy
objects.

Rapier and Archery - For each of these, the champions are working on
something very special. So special that it's a surprise.

Armored

The armored tourney will be a two-hour bear pit. We've only got a little bit
of fall fighting season left; this is your chance to get in as much fighting
as you can stand. To add a little twist, the victory conditions for each
combatant will be determined by a roll of the dice.

Endurance is rewarded, as combatants will get a point for each time they
enter the list, and two points for a win. Each combatant will receive one or
two tokens from the marshal, and will return these to the MOL to have his or
her score counted.

Victory conditions are as follows:

1 - "To the death!"--Kill your opponent
2 - "It's only a flesh wound!"--Wound your opponent. Taking either an arm or
a leg will earn you victory; kill your oppnent instead and you will lose.
3 - "Thief! Chop off his hand!"--Take your opponent's arm. Again, you will
lose if you kill your opponent instead.
4 - "He's trying to run away!"--Take your opponent's leg. Again, you will
lose if you kill your opponent instead.
5 - "Black Knight" victory conditions--To win, you must leg your opponent
and take an arm (in any order). If you kill your opponent, you lose.
6 - Choose your own victory conditions from any of the other five.

Note that each combatant's victory conditions will be unknown to his or her
opponent.

*Rapier:*

For rapier combat we shall be holding a modified bearpit-style tournament to
select our new Baronial Rapier Champion (a prize, of course, will also be
awarded to the overall tourney winner). The tourney field will be fed by two
lines of fighters. Each bout will take one fighter from each line. As the
fighters prepare to enter the list, a die will be rolled to determine which
of them takes the role of the Queen's Guard, and which the role of the
dastardly outlaw the Queen's Guard must subdue.
The Queen's Guard will follow "first blood" conditions, so that the 'outlaw'
may be delivered up for trial, while the 'outlaw' must slay the 'guard' in
order to make good an esape. Each fighter will start the bout with a single
sword. Other weapons/parry devices will be available around the perimeter of
the list field. (Fighters who wish may stage their own items around the
perimeter prior to their fights.) The winner of each bout will receive a
token from the marshal, which must be delivered to the MoL to record
victory. As the theme of our event revolves around how Hollywood views the
Middle Ages, we invite you to play your roles in grand movie style (the more
ham, the better we like it…) Hope to see you there!
*Archery:*

The archery tourney will feature a combination of timed and untimed targets.
The archery range will be open throughout the afternoon, allowing archers to
shoot around other activities. Rather than competing head-to-head, archers
will shoot at their leisure, and the MOL will tally the scores after the
range closes.

Thrown Weapons:

As with the archery tourney, the thrown weapons range will be open
throughout the afternoon. You may compete at your leisure, and the MOL will
tally scores after the range closes.

For all tournaments, the baronial champions, as well as the tourney winners
(who may or may not be the same person), will be announced at their
Excellencies' Court.

Yours in Service,
Adriana Michaels
