Just thought I would add to the debate about leaving from DC or above on a 
Friday. Don't leave at 1, millions of other travelers have the same idea, 
leave at 10am. 1-7pm is rush hour on I-95 south on a Friday. I have hit so 
much traffic at 1pm on a Friday that a seven hour trip to Myrtle Beach from 
DC took eleven hours. Most of that was from Springfield VA to Fredericksburg 
VA, which is a 50 mile stretch of road.

I wonder if it would better to never hold uneven in the extreme south or 
north as the trip in good traffic can take up to nine hours for those on the 
extreme ends to get to the other extreme end and far more if you hit any 
rush hour in the north. Charlottesville VA to Raleigh NC would be reasonable 
boundries to keep the drive reasonable for everyone.
