Born and raised Roman Catholic here... and we were taught in school that 
you don't reverence the throne, nor the altar; when one is going to 
genuflect or otherwise reverence, you do so in the direction of *where the 
consecrated host is* -- for we are doing reverence to the Lord.

Since most parishes have the tabernacle right behind the chairs wich are 
right behind the altars, it's an easy confusion to make.
