[MR] A Question of Protocol

Actually, in those days the MidRealm was widely considered to be extreme in
its concept of the reverence paid to the crown or coronet and the person
wearing it. (I well remember a filk song that came out of the Middle that
made reference to making obeisance to an empty throne!)
That occasionally caused some "interesting" issues at Pennsic. For
instance, when the Middle initiated gate guards a la Buckingham Palace,
there was a lot of negative commentary and some real issues with
miscommunications when monarchs from other kingdoms tried to send messages
about changes of time, etc. (I was Brigantia Herald of the East from 1983
to 1986 and war herald twice in that period so a lot of the defusing of
those situations fell straight into my lap. . .)
Alisoun who is generally of the opinion that your own persona should govern
exactly how you deal with the Crown. . .

It definitely varies by kingdom, and I get the impression that things have
grown lax in this respect over the years, though this could be simply
nostalgia talking.
When I joined the SCA in the Midrealm, you bowed or curtsied to the monarchs
and heirs whenever you passed them. If they passed you, you did the same.
I don't recall not bowing if they weren't in the crowns, though I do
remember a very interesting event out in the St. Louis area around 1987 when
the head of my household was prince and I was fetching his coronet from the
car and had scads of people bowing as I passed.
We also bowed to the empty thrones regardless of the status of court, but
when I moved to Atlantia, this seemed not to be the custom here.
As a landed baroness, I don't expect anyone to bow to me at any time except
if we're processing into court. I appreciate it when people do, but I don't
ever expect it and don't think protocol requires it at all.
At places like Pennsic, unless there's a procession or some other formal
occasion going on, the only crowns I bow to are the monarchs and heirs of
Atlantia, otherwise you'd be up and down like a jumping jack.
