I was taught that you bow to the crown, not to the person wearing the
crown. I have also had the experience of being a retainer, and having
people bow as I carried a crown on a velvet pillow from the king's tent to
the feast hall. And I was taught (by the First Knight of Meridies) that we
are honoring the ideals of chivalry and honor that are embodied in the
symbolic crown, and not the individual who happens to be wearing that crown
in this particular half-year.
