Or...rather than sit in a long, boring meeting (been to one, so I
know...), you could come to Dun Carraig and enjoy a day of fighting,
A&S, great food and good camaraderie at Challenge of the Heart! The day
promises to be a lot of fun for one and all...including, among other
things, a Ladies' Gallery. Laird Muirghen has already posted his
menu...and it looks yummy.
So far as A&S is concerned, there are several competitions and displays,
all of which promise an opportunity for artists and craftspeople to
display their skills...and for you to find a new thing that you'd like
to try! Here is the announcement:
Back when Dun Carraig began holding Challenge of the Heart, a number of
years ago, the Challenge was divided into three parts. The first was the
fighting, both heavy and rapier. The second was that fighters compose a
poem in honor of the one for whom they fought. The third part was that
the consort should create a favor for the one fighting for them. We are
renewing that tradition, with a few changes. These competitions are no
longer part of the Tournament itself, but rather an adjunct to it. Entry
in these competitions is also no longer required of fighters.

*Favors*
Favors must be of a period design, something that would be given to
someone special. It could be a sleeve, a ring or any one of a number of
things. They can be in any medium. All entries must be accompanied by
documentation. Documentation can be as simple as a reference from a
period source. For example, there is a reference in the poem "Troilus
and Criseyde" by Chaucer:
And eek, the bet from sorwe him to releve,
She made him were a pencel of hir sleve.
Which translates as,
And also, the better of sorrow him to relieve.
She made him wear a pencel of here sleeve.

*Poetry*
Using a documented period style and form, compose a poem praising the
attributes of a friend or special person. The poem should not be longer
than a few verses as it will, unless the poet declines the honor, be
read for the enjoyment and praise of those ladies who will occupy the
Ladies' Gallery. The poet can either deliver the work themselves or we
will have someone read it for them. Documentation of the form and style
will be required.

*"Then and Now"*
It is always interesting to observe the progress we make as we learn a
craft or skill. This exhibition is a way for artists and craftspeople to
share this process. We ask that you bring your first or earliest
available effort at a particular art, craft or skill and your most
recent effort. This is not a competition, but a way for others to see
your progress…and possibly gain inspiration and encouragement as they
develop new skills.

*Novice Display*
This display is open to anyone who has been working with a particular
art or craft for a year or less. This includes anyone, whether you are
new to the SCA or someone who has been in for many years. This is an
opportunity to get assistance, constructive criticism or ideas about
what you're doing.

See you there!
