Subject: Gulf Wars Emprise - Thursday March 16th, 2006

The Company of Saint Martin of Tours invites all intermediate and
advanced riders to an Elizabethan Tournament celebrating the return
of spring.

It is early in Queen Elizabeth's reign and the cult of the virgin
queen is in full swing. Three queens have traveled to join her in a
grand tournament, where the queens, as Greek Goddesses, stand as
judges and the four riders, each lords of Elizabeth's court, hold the
field as Gods of Olympus, summoning mortals to test their honor on
the field of Chivalry.

The games will be jousting, mounted combat, and quintain/mock knight.
Riders must be authorized and ride at either intermediate or advanced
level. Those that plan to compete in mounted combat and jousting must
be already authorized at these activities before the Emprise. There
will be a mounted combat authorization class earlier in the week.

Minimum requirements:
An attempt at Tudor/Elizabethan era trappings for horse and rider.
Short sheet barding that comes to the hocks is acceptable for horses.
Nice, preferably decorated, strap barding is also acceptable. Rich
fabrics and designs with heraldic motifs were popular.

If the rider does not have later period clothing and there is a lack
of time for making them, an attempt at ancient Greek attire is an
acceptable alternative (chitons, etc.

20Information). These should be worn over armor/garb.

Those entering the mounted combat and jousting competitions must have
an appropriate kit and weapons. This includes a helm with crest and
torse (mantling is optional). Jousters should have at least one
lance, preferably two. Mounted combatants should have a sword. See
SCA rules for additional jousting armor requirements.

A heraldic banner or standard, having either the rider's arms or
badge.

Riders may have one attendant if they are non-armiguous or hold an
Award of Arms.
Riders may have two attendants if they hold a Grant of Arms.
Peers of the Society may have three attendants.
Royal Peers may have four attendants.

Riders may address the Ladies of the Berfois when they are introduced
individually by the Herald. Riders are encouraged to keep their
letters brief.

Riders do not need a personal herald or a billet. A review of crests
is not planned.

Please send the following information to Lady Peryn Rose Whytehorse
at anicholls at mindspring dot com (anicholls at ...):

Your full name and title (include pronunciation). Your kingdom and
local group. Your peer (if you are associated), you may include the
name of your peer's' household. Maximum of three awards which you
have received and which you would like announced. If you are
currently a champion (King's Lancer, current local champion, etc.).
Blazon of your arms and your crest. Level you will ride and which of
the games you will participate in. Name of your horse. Person, if
any, whose token you bear

Riders will process in by order of precedence. Once all have been
lined up on the field, the Herald will call each individually to be
presented to the Berfois. When all have finished, riders will process
out and the games will begin. Riders will compete, in order of
precedence, against the four riders of the Company of Saint Martin.
St. Martins will decide who of their Company will take each pass.
Formal challenges are not planned, good natured banter in the spirit
of the Tournament's theme - a celebration of Spring by the Gods and
Goddesses of Olympus - or alluding to feats in honor of Elizabeth
and the other Queens is encouraged.

There will be prizes for best score for each game, as well as for
most chivalrous rider, and best period heraldic display/kit.

A second missive explaining the roles of the Queens and their riders,
as well as the theme for the Emprise will be sent soon.

May your fires burn brightly in the midst of Demeter's despair, for
soon her daughter Persephone will rejoin her and all the world will
celebrate.
