Indian artifacts uncovered at site of planned parkCRANBERRY, Pa. -
An archaeological survey at a planned township park in Butler County
uncovered more than 3,000 American Indian artifacts dating back thousands of
years.
Arrowheads, spear parts, tools and pottery were among the items found on 115
acres of farmland that Cranberry Township bought to turn into a park. The
artifacts date between 1,000 B.C. and A.D. 95, said Christine Davis, an
archaeological consultant.
The excavation also turned up remnants of a cranberry bog for which the
township was named.
The area, north of Pittsburgh, was always considered good hunting grounds
because of the food the bogs provided, but the materials found at the dig
and the area's closeness to several prominent Indian trails indicated
significant trading also took place. Some items were sent to the state's
museum in Harrisburg, and others will be used by the Cranberry Area
Historical Society. - AP
