Yes this came up about 7 or 8 years ago and had some interest in both Maryland and VA. As I recall the problem was the copyright to the emblem. I also recall it was more legal than practical. For Maryland it takes at least 75 people to commit to the plates and we should not have a problem qualifying. The thoughts ran two ways, either the SCA emblem or the Kingdom. The facts appear to make the SCA not possible (at least at that time). May be worth dredging this one up again. I may still have the notes from then.

Has the idea ever been discussed about getting a Atlantia/SCA type of
specialty plate through the DMV here in Virginia ? There are a few flaming
hoops to be jumped through, but I am sure it is set up that way so not just
any group can petition to get their own plate. Something like the Atlantia
heraldic device on the left side and www.sca.org on the bottom. That leaves
5 or 6 spaces for your personalization. Below are a few of the rules to get
things going. www.dwvnow has the complete scoop. I mean if Jimmy Buffet fans
can get one, why can't we we ? Skorri
*Organizational/Individual Inquiry:*
To begin the legislative process for a new license plate, an individual,
group, entity, organization, or other entity seeking authorization must
contact their legislator and demonstrate they have meet the issuance
requirements of *350 prepaid applications or can provide a $3,500
administration fee*. Following is information related to new license plate
process:
- Each prepaid application must be on a form prescribed by DMV and
must include the proposed or authorized issuance fee. The prescribed form
for DMV is the VSA 10<http://www.dmv.virginia.gov/webdoc/pdf/vsa10.pdf>.
The form can be reproduced for distribution. The prorated fee schedule on
page two of the form does not apply during the pre-paid application
collection process.
- The typical issuance fee for most special license plates is $10 per
year.
- Some special license plates involve revenue sharing and typically
have an issuance fee of $25 per year. The General Assembly review criteria
for all proposed revenue-sharing license plate authorizations is set out in
§ 46.2-725 D. of the Code of Virginia.
The review criteria is used to determine whether the revenues are to
be shared with entities or organizations that (i) provide to the
Commonwealth or its citizens a broad public service that is to be funded, in
whole or in part, by the proposed revenue sharing special license plate
authorization and (ii) are at least one of the following:
1. A nonprofit corporation as defined in § 501 (c) (3) of the
United States Internal Revenue Code;
2. An agency, board, commission, or other entity established or
operated by the Commonwealth;
3. A political subdivision of the Commonwealth; or
4. An institution of higher education whose main campus is
located in Virginia.
