Posting to the whole list this time, instead of just to Sir Bryce:

Talk about pushing my geezer-button... I was a n00b up-hill a ways, in
Isenfir, in '75. After July '76, I was out in what's now Eldern Hills,
Ansteorra, which up until mid-to-late '79 was an SCA-less wasteland. I
noticed that the Tir-y-Don campsite at Pennsic VI looks like it was on
what's now Horde Hill. Were the battles over on the Runefield at that time?
Aye, the encampment was below what is now known as Horde Hill. Back in
ancient times the royalty camped on top of the hill and looked down on the rest of
us <g>.

The main battle was held on what is (was?) called the "Old Archery Field".
But pick up battles were held in the middle of the main encampment and we put
our tents around the field.

Teams for pick up melees were chosen by lining up the fighters and counting
off 1,2,1, 2. This meant the fighters needed to remember what side they were
on and call out their numbers to make sure they weren't hitting someone on
their side. During one battle a knight (think it was Bearkiller) worked his way
over to me by asking each opponent what was their number and saying that was
his number and going to the next fighter, rinse, repeat. When he got to my
marshalling spot he shouted, "What's my number??". I asked him where he started
and told him his number... and he went back into battle.
