the other option, for the terminally cheap, but
theatric school is to buy the cheapest digital watch
you can find, take off the band, and sew a mount for
the watch face inside your hat. then when someone asks
you what time it is, you hold your hat out overhead,
look at the shadow cast by the hat, read the watch,
and announce the time to the nearest 10 minutes or so.
generally the person stomps off muttering something
like "why can't he just say he doesn't know instead of
pretending to read shadows." imagine their wonderment
when they discover that your "estimate" is correct!
it's pretty funny.
