Janie,
You did everything right. When someone pulls the trigger, it means that all
of their plans failed, and it's a last resort. Yours worked. This is not to
say that "pull the trigger" = "bad planner", it's more like von Clausewitz's
dictum: No plan survives contact with the enemy. You did not have to pull
the trigger, and I'm glad for you on that count. I hope that venting on
these lists, has helped you process the experience. May the Portsmouth (or
whoever) Police catch this guy. He needs to become No Longer A Problem.
I'm not currently certified, but I have taught personal-protection classes.
The only suggestion I would make, is to get a ready-access pistol safe, like
a GunVault(tm) or something similar. That way, you can keep the gun loaded,
while still having it away from Chris's inquisitive little hands.
We don't have kids, so I don't have to worry about that. Target stuff is
locked up in steel gun cabinets, and unloaded. There's a couple of "ready
guns" designated for home defense and concealed carry, and those are
available and loaded. Just don't put a trigger lock on a loaded gun. Use a
ready-safe, instead.
