[MR] The 'weight' of titles

Greetings, again!

I was just thinking about when I have used 'THL' with
my name. Most often I do not, however, there have been
a few occasions. And all of these have been in written
form.

One is when I want to approach something in a more
formal fashion.

A second, and more significant reason, is to lend
'weight' to my missive. To show that I have been
around for a while and have some implied experience.
After all, the award/title is our resume.

But I will pose another question....
Is alphabet soup any more or less period than 'THL'?
If we need or wish to use these signifiers, what IS
appropriate? I have seen documents where they are
spelled out, but those were written by a scribe.
