Hmmm...  Wish I could remember the exact spelling...  In a long ago 
discussion of this subject, someone offered the Saxon (?) term 
"gaetwierd" or some such (literally "gate-warder", at a guess).  
Anyway, I was much taken with the term, but then I've always been a 
bit wierd...
