This is background for anyone seriously thinking of going to Meridies.

Just a bit of historical trivia from someone has lived in Crawfordville and
neighboring Washington. Who was Alexander Stephens? He was one of the
senators for Georgia at the time of succession. The other was Robert Toombs
of Washington. They were roommates at the University of GA in the space now
occupied by the Dean of Students. The two were the last people to see
President Zachary Taylor alive. (it is rumored that they put some arsenic in
his nightly milk even though he was from the south but took the north's view
of slavery. Toombs was the only senator to give a farewell address to the
Senate. Stephens was Vice President of the Confederacy. Toombs was the
Secretary of War and was a General for a minor battle over a bridge. Both
have a more colorful past that is worthy of research if you do not limit
yourself to Medieval studies. I have been to all of the homes and campus (I
went to high school in Washington, worked in C'ville before college then
went to UGA). The Stephens house is nice to visit but not worth a trip if
seeing the house is your only purpose in going. It is worth seeing if you
were in the area already.
