Raffles are a good idea and sometimes you get really great results. I would
point out that in some areas, city codes, and zonings laws mandate you must
have a licence to hold a raffle. Make sure you check with your local
government first. They usually charge a small fee for you to have a licence
to hold a raffle.

It occurs to me that raffles are more likely to raise
significant amounts of cash than silent auctions. I can't
afford $100 for that lovely doodad, so I won't even bid,
but I can afford a $1 raffle ticket. Or maybe even $5.
I raffled off a quilt for 9/11 and raised $1500; it
wouldn't have brought anywhere nearly that much as a
silent auction.
