As I recall, post-Isabelle, someone (I forget the lady's name) was
putting together a hurricane crash-space database.
While we're at it, something occurred to me, watching the refugee situation.
******** RANT WARNING ******** Get out the salt shaker...
It's 4 years after 9/11. FEMA, DHS, the Red Cross, and
gods-know-who-else have been beating the drum on emergency
preparedness. A lot of state and county governments have free training
for Community Emergency Response Teams. It ain't hard to fill a couple
of Rubbermaid tubs with canned food, toilet paper, soap, and whatnot,
to throw in the car.
Besides the whole Pennsic-camper, reenactor, Chirurgeon, etcetera
thing, I've made a point of readiness. I can live for a week (heavy
activity) or two (sitting around in a refugee camp) out of my car. My
prep for Isabelle consisted of counting the water jugs and propane
bottles, then checking batteries in the flashlights. After signing up
back before Isabelle, I finally completed CERT training in May. I
have a question. WHY AM I THE EXCEPTION, RATHER THAN THE AVERAGE?!!!
Granted, a lot of those still stuck in New Orleans didn't have squat
to begin with, but then there's the stubborn ones who COULD have
prepared. I would encourage all who read this, to grab that Rubbermaid
tub, and fill it. It could save you from all kinds of grief when
Michelle, Norman, Olivia, Patrick, Querida, Roger, Sally, or Tom comes
your way.
*********** END RANT *******
Whew. Thanks for letting me vent.
