[MR] raffles versus silent auctions

Another dissapointing thing I have witnessed at a silent auction was
people choosing not to bid on an item because they don't want to outbid
a specific person, whether a friend or special "hat". In this
particular case bidding was hot until the current Queen or (or
Princess, I forget which) bid on an item. Then no one else did any more
bidding and I heard several people say they didn't want to out bid the
Queen. So the item didn't actually end up making much money...not even
what it was worth to the artisan (hint, make a minium bid limit on what
you donate). Ironically, this auction was to raise money for the royal
travel fund...So in essence, the royals still ended up funding that
anyway!
So, maybe if there was a simple way to have silent anonymous bidding...

"If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy.
If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem.
But I arise in the morning torn between the desire to improve the world,
and a desire to enjoy the world.
This makes it hard to plan the day."
