[MR] Doing the math with the 5% statement

Friends,

I apologize for not re-reading every post regarding
the statement that only 5% of attendees to an event
help out, but I would genuinely appreciate knowing if
there is a source for this statement.

As a baronial Exchequer, I do the math for event
reports regularly.  Say 200 people attend an event. 
If only 5% (i.e. 10) helped, it would be next to
impossible to pull such an event off.  I would
guesstimate that more like at least 20% participate,
and in that number I include folks like myself who may
not plunge toilets, but spend a significant amount of
time with the paperwork.

Even at a Canton level event with an attendance of 60
people would require far more than 3 people to pull it
off.

However, if you are talking about a Pennsic, I could
very well think that of 10,000+ people, less than 5%
pull that one off.  But even at a Pennsic, most
everyone adds to the overall experience in their own
way.

Getting more active participation from the populace is
a noble goal, but no small task.  Not only does it
take more people to show initiative, but it requires
delegation and management skills that are not
something that comes naturally to everyone.  

In my opinion, though, trying to coerce others into
pitching in through shame is not a good motivator.
