Sorry, my previous mesage should have had quotes to indicate what I was replying to, it's late, I'm going to bed :-( Geffrei
Here it is again, with proper punctuation:
"But I DO feel like a guest at other groups' events. I don't mean I
won't help out, but I don't feel the same obligations as I do in my home
group. I thought that was the point of having different groups put on
different events--everyone has a couple of times a year when they work their
asses off for everyone else's benefit, and the rest of the time they get the
benefit of another group's work. (Kingdom events and things like Pennsic are
different.)
I think that my feelings are pretty common."
I would have to respectfully say that hasn't been my experience, in theory or
practice.
It wouldn't occur to me to feel like a guest at a volunteer run event. I don't
know how common that thought is among others, I can only say that I've been
amazed that at *every* event I've gone to in the past year, I've met people from
all over Atlantia that are volunteering their services in some way for events
that aren't being run by their barony. I'm from Marinus and aside from helping
at our events, in the past year, I've served lunch at a Stierbach event, washed
dishes all day at a Tir Y Don event, cooked all day at a Yarnvid event, and done
plenty more behind the scenes work in other baronies. At every event I've gone
to in the past year, I've either e-mailed the autocrat and/or feast cook in
advance to offer help, or if I've gone at the last minute, found them when I got
there to see if they needed help with anything (with one exception when I was
already late for an archery shoot). I'm only offering this as a single person
example, I've met people at ALL of those eve
nts that were doing the same things for baronies that weren't their own.
