[MR] Defined description of lines and columns....Success. But how are they used?

Okay,
 
The description of a line and a column was understood. What I need to know is from a command point of view (POV) when do you use one over the other? and what are the down sides to using each? I'm trying to figure the command POV for sending troops into a field battle.
