Greetings and Salutations!
It is with great pleasure that I write these words.
For many, many years I have traveled the knowne world. Biding my
years between the Kingdoms of Atlantia, the West, Drachenwald, Caid and
distant Lochac. Yet now, tempest tossed I find myself back in my home
Kingdom, my home Barony, and indeed the very Canton which was my wondrous
gateway into our Society.
Having returned after twenty+ years, I am essentially new to you
all, please allow me to introduce myself.
My true name is Robin Hood Dial II (thought you would like that!),
and for the past ten years I have been
an advertising photographer in San Francisco. My family has convinced me to
return from that land of the lotus-eaters back to these ancestral grounds.
The reason? Well, to work in the family business; Commercial real estate.
*gulp*
Having just come back to Columbia, South Carolina, I am in the
awkward position of not knowing anyone in my home Kingdom. Ha! Yet you can
imagine my excitement to once again become involved with this wonderful
place. No matter where I have gone in this world I have always claimed my
blood from Atlantia, as is the truth. And to find that the reigning King
and Queen are local, well
wow!
For the King and Queen I give my warmest greetings and sincerest
salute from lands afar, for all others, you as well have a hearty cheer,
and the promise of my energy, my resources, and my respect!
My past within the Society? Let's see... I joined our fair game in
the bright summer of 1982, as a young lad of 14. And kept my shield high in
those early years. My first weapon
ball and chain (at fourteen!)
hehehe,
different times!
From Columbia, SC I moved to Chapel Hill, NC and spent five years
cloistered amidst those hoary halls of wisdom. Earning my degrees in
psychology and motion picture production. From Kappellenberg I ventured
into the center of Drachenwald and fought shoulder to shoulder with a
variety of anachronistic groups in Prague, where I lived for some time. My
years from 1982 to 1990 were all about the sword, the shield, the pole and
the axe.
From Europe, I moved to Caid and took the hermetic robes of an
alchemist in Los Angeles, and for many years diligently studied
late-medieval metaphysics, with an emphasis on Dr. John Dee's Enochiana.
During this time I completed my Masters Degree in photography.
Then, I moved (with some celerity) in 1994 to live in Melbourne
Australia, a temporary position had been offered me at the Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology. My single year in that nation was a memorable one
indeed. The SCA in OZ is a vibrant thing, and I grew much in the community
of Stormhold. Strong people in that distant land! Even now, I return every
year for their sublime SCA festivals.
From Lochac I returned to California and opened a photography
studio in San Francisco. Those early days were monopolized with myne owne
business... and I lapsed in Society involvement. But one winter day, I saw
the flash of shields and heard the thunder of combat... I opened my eyes in
the very heart of the SCA, and for the past seven years have been involved
where it all began, in Berkeley, CA.
I have moved through a variety of personae, exploring my interests
in multi-cultural medieval history. And this move of mine provides me a
golden opportunity to leave the accolades of the past behind and begin
afresh. Ab initio!
Hmmmm, now what to do... Well, first off, I am excited to meet all
the local folks in and around South Carolina. I also plan on attending the
Unevent and the Feast of St. Andrew this December. Local? Write me!
My new home in Columbia is three blocks from the state house,
downtown, and I would very seriously like to offer my home for any meetings
and workshops that local SCA groups may need space for. I can also offer a
way point for those passing though.
What are my Society interests? First and foremost : history!
Though these are all close seconds : Armor making, Blacksmithing, Jewelry
making, Clothing design, Weapon collecting, workshops in medieval society,
history, warfare, language, Medieval Japan, Mid-16th C. England, the
various religions of the middle ages, Alchemy, Hermeticism, and the
fascinating mixtures of science, faith, and Magick. Combat? Well my days
of fighting may yet come again, but I'm a bit rusty on the stick. The gym
beckons!
I am most keen on who goes to Pennsic, Estrella, and any of the
wars in Europe or Australia. I shall attend most, and would love to
introduce all my varied companions to one another!
I look forward to contributing to this list and welcome
correspondence anytime. Particularly discussing on my myriad pursuits. Be
well, my friends!
With true love for the Society, I rest, and plan,
Of Great Works to come,
~Robin Hood Dial II
