Unto the Tavern, greetings:
On Monday, I cried the message above
unto the gentles at the Merry Rose. As a result,
a number of people were disconcerted, and several
were seriously annoyed. Moreover, I must admit
that when I did so, I knew that this was a
possible result. I was wrong to do so, and I
offer most humble apollogies to those within the
Tavern who were upset. I shall not so offend in the future.
With most profound thanks to Lord Lyon,
I fear that he overestimated both my eptitude and
my obedience to the rules of polite
discourse. Posting to this list was not done
accidentally; the decision to do so was
deliberate. With all gratitude for the suggested
"easy out", I must acknowlege that my action was
intentional (albeit obviously a poor choice).
Having admitted my error, perhaps I may
be allowed a few words of explanation. I had
been most worried about the elections in the
mundane realm which encompasses Marinus, Caer
Mear, and other parts of the Known Worlde. I
composed the message, and sent it to several
hundred individuals known to me to be interested
in such things, and also to six list-servers with
an unknown number of members. Four of these are
overtly political, one is SCAdian but designed
especially for OT postings, and the last was the Merry Rose.
I convinced myself (so does desire make
fools of us all) that anyone on the Merry Rose
list who wasn't interested would see either the
subjectline of the mesage, or the warning at the
beginning, and delete the message, and continue
with their day. Having convinced myself of that,
it was easy to decide that since no one would be
bothered, it would be all right to disregard the
"on-topic" rule and include the Tavern as a recipient.
It is apparent that I was seriously in
error. To those who were offended by the mundane
intrusion into the Merry Rose Tavern, my most
humble apologies. I shall attempt not to interrupt your Dream again.
I might diffidently suggest that
Atlantia look to the experience of Marinus, which
has not only an "official" email list, but
another which is specifically for "off-topic"
subjects. That is, they have not only
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SCA-atlantia-marinus/>,
but also
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/marinus_unplugged/>.
This seems to work well for them, and might work as well for the larger group.

"[T]here is nothing more difficult to take in
hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain
in its success, than to take the lead in the
introduction of a new order of things. Because
the innovator has for enemies all those who have
done well under the old conditions, and lukewarm
defenders in those who may do well under the new.
This coolness arises partly from fear of the
opponents, who have the laws on their side, and
partly from the incredulity of men, who do not
readily believe in new things until they have had a long experience of them."
Nicolò Machiavelli, THE PRINCE, c. 1505
