It is my understanding that it is inappropriate for
reigning monarchs (and their heirs) to use personal
armoury while serving as royalty.  If you wade into
Real Medieval Political Thought, the king *is* the
kingdom.  Thus the 'kingdom device' is the king's
device.  The SCA draws a line between the individual
and the title (and thus the armoury) but that's merely
a reflection of the nature of our monarchy.

That said, heraldry is (or can be) spiffy and cool,
though personally I don't see that it should be a
requirement for anything.  My own lord husband was one
of the 'offenders' this last Crown Tourney, though the
paperwork on registering a device for him is pending. 
But that's just me, and clearly Their Highnesses feel
differently.  *shrug*
