Between 26 July and 11 December 2005, the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge
University Library will host a major exhibition of medieval illumianted
manuscripts.
Cambridge is among the world's richest treasuries of medieval illuminated
manuscripts. It is also unique in having its star objects distributed among
numerous repositories, rather than concentrated in a single institution.
Collectively, the Fitzwilliam Museum, the University Library, and the Cambridge
Colleges can write the history of book production form late antiquity to the
Renaissance.
"The Cambridge Illuminations" will present these treasures to the public on
a scale that has not been attempted previously. Opening wiht the
sixth-century 'Gospels of St. Augustine' ..., it spans ten centuries of European book
production, represents all major centres of learning, and covers the full range
of religious and secular texts, in Latin and the vernacular languages.
..
"The Cambridge Illumiantions" is the second largest manuscript exhibition
after the celebrated Burlington Fine Arts exhibition of 1908 ... Over 200
manuscripts and illuminated leaves from all Cambridge collections will be
displayed in the two venues [Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Library] ...
A most exciting, last-minute addition to the exhibition will be the
Macclesfield Psalter, just acquired by the Fitzwilliam Museum after a major public
campaign which ensured its future in this country. While unbound for
conservation, the manuscript will be displayed in its individual leaves in a gallery
of its own for the full duration of the exhibition.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a thoroughly researched, richly
illustrated and affordable catalogue. ... Hardbound copies of the catalogue will
be available from Harvey/Brepols Publishers. Paperback copies will be
available at the recommended retail price of L24.95 from Fitzwilliam Museum
(_sales at fitzwilliammuseum.org_ (mailto:sales at fitzwilliammuseum.org) ). In the
Fitzwilliam Museum shops during the duration of the exhibition, the paperback
catalogue will be sold for L19.95. NOTE: I have already been in touch with the
bookstore. Info is not yet available but they will contact me when it is. I
will foward this information to the lists immediately. The price is wonderful
.. I may have to go to Cambridge just to get the 5 pound discount, of
course.
Please forward this message to any interested parties.

"But if by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind,
someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about
the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools,
their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes
we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our
policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say
I'm a 'Liberal'." John F. Kennedy, 14 Sept 1960
