Subject: Viking Garb Workshop 31 July 10:00 - 3:00
Greetings all!
The Highland Foorde Chapter of the St Anne's Clothiers Guild is hosting
a Viking Garb workshop on 31 July 10:00 - 3:00 at my home (8604 Slate
Hill Circle, Frederick, MD 21704). We still have space for 4
participants, but can also accommodate auditors, so please RSVP soon.
I will put on a pot of chili or soup, and have fresh baked bread,
cheese, and sodas. In the past, folks have asked if they could bring
munchies. Please feel free to bring something, but PLEASE do NOT feel
obligated!
(NOTE: This class will be preceded on Friday, 29 July by a workshop to
make beaded Viking necklaces. I will get a separate notice out on that,
so keep your eyes open.)
Molly (Baroness Mary Isabel of Heatherstone, Barony of Dun Carraig) will
be teaching, and assisting her will be Lady Kaolin.
The class includes an overview of male and female garb from the skin
out,
construction methods, appropriate fibers and embellishments. Those
interested can then actually make a fitted underdress. (NOTE: This style
of fitted dress, with slight changes to the underarm gores, can take you
right
through the 14th century. Bonus!!)
Sewers should bring practice fabric (muslin works really well).
(Although I'm going to be brave and work with linen) You will need three
times your height in fabric (four if you're quite stout or want a very
full skirt). This also allows for a little "oops" extra. You'll also
need a package of singlefold bias tape, thread, pins, scissors and
measuring tapes (typical sewing stuff).
DIRECTIONS:
8604 Slate Hill Circle, Frederick MD 21704
301 631-8111
FROM FREDERICK/HAGERSTOWN:
Take I-70 E, exit 56. Turn left onto 144. You'll pass the National
Guard Armory, cross over the Monocacy River. Next street on the right
is Bartonsville Road. Turn right onto Bartonsville Road. Go about the
length of a football field. You'll see the River Oaks neighborhood on
the right. Turn right. Take the second left (Slate Hill Place). This
is a very short street that ends in two cul-de-sacs. One on the left,
and one on the right. We're the second house on the left in the
cul-de-sac on the left. Feel free to park on the grass in the
cul-de-sac.
FROM GAITHERSBURG/DC:
Directions from I-270 can get a little complex. There is a new
interchange onto I-70 E, coming down I-270. This interchange is so
New, it might not be reflected on Mapquest yet. Anyway, follow I-270
all the way to Frederick, where it ends. You will pass a mall on the
right. Just past the mall, I-270 splits. The far right line exits out
to I-70 E. Then follow the directions from above to exit 56, etc.
FROM BALTIMORE:
Take I-70 W. Get off at exit 59 onto 144. Curve to the right and merge
onto 144. Follow this through the light (Spring Ridge), then up the
hill. Note that 144 is split by a median. It merges at the top of the
hill. Once it merges, the next street at on the left is Bartonsville
Road. Turn left. Go about the length of a football field. You'll see the
River Oaks neighborhood on the right. Turn right. Take the second left
(Slate Hill Place). This is a very short street that ends in two
cul-de-sacs. One on the left, and one on the right. We're the second
house on the left in the cul-de-sac on the left. Feel free to park on
the grass in the cul-de-sac.
