Lady Glynis,

Actually, what you should do is make some leather washers, with a hole just 
slightly larger than your pin, and slide it over the pin so that it sits on 
top of the canvas.  It should be pretty thick leather, say, between 13 and 
16 oz., and should be roughly 3" square.
