I was very excited tonight to see the first auction item being
offered on the Friends of the Cavalry web site. Not only is this a beautiful
Mounted Combat helm, but it is the only one we currently have in Atlantia!
The Atlantian Cavalry is truely blessed to have such people as THLady
Donwenna la Mareshal be so supportive of our growth, not only by coming to
Atlantia at the end of June for the All Things Marshal event, but also by
donating a helm that normally sells for $150.00. We are truely blessed to
have people such as Milady Desideria, who has gone to a great deal of effort
to put together this fundraiser for the Atlantian Cavalry and who is willing
to handle this very important project.
I know that there are people who are not familiar with the projects
that are being put together to help the Atlantian Cavalry grow. It is my
sincere hope that all Atlantians will take pride in their growing Cavalry.
That being said, there also has to be an understanding that fundraising is a
necessity for all non profit organizations. Since the Kingdom of Atlantia
doesn't tax us, or make a profit from a product or service of some sort,
fundraising has to be done. There are many ways to raise funds...bakesales,
silent actions, profits from events...I think Atlantia has seen many
different variations on the same theme but having an on line auction,
similar to the Ebay concept, is very new.
As a matter of fact, I think that Atlantians get to take the credit
for inventing this new form! There are several reasons why I like this
particular fundraising venue but the main reason is that it is a venue in
which all Atlantians can participate, not only in donating items to showcase
on the auctions, but also being able to bid from anywhere in Atlantia at a
time convenient to each.
So, what is this money going to be spent on? I'm sure that everyone
is aware that bringing the Cavalry to an event is expensive. The larger
Baronies may not have much difficulty in spending the extra $50.00 necessary
for the extra insurance but smaller Cantons might find the insurance monies
for events and Official Cavalry Practices a little bit more than they can
budget. My regional deputies and I hope to be able to raise enough money to
give each of the three regions some towards insurance for events and
Official Practices.
Equipment is also expensive to purchase. At this time, Atlantia has
very little equipment. Each region would benefit by having access to
equipment that is available for them to use at their events and Official
Practices. Gone are the days when the Atlantian Cavalry could all go to the
same event happening in Atlantia. As of last year, the Cavalry has grown to
the point that we have multiple events and practices that are being
scheduled throughout the Kingdom. It is so important that the proper
equipment is available to all, from the largest Barony to the smallest
Canton and Shire.
We also need to bring in personnel to help us add the different
mounted activities since there are several of these activities that very,
very few Atlantians have even seen. THLady Donwenna la Mareshal has agreed
to leave her veterinary practice and family to spend four days working in
the summer heat making Mounted Archery, Mounted Combat, IKEqC, an Emprise
and the Companions of the Rose possible for Atlantia. Since THLady Donwenna,
as past SCA EQ head, current head of IKEqC, a founder of the Lance of St
Anne, a founder of the Companions of the Rose, an organizer of the
interkingdom award called the Golden Lance...the list goes on and
on...Donwenna has the expertise to help Atlantia add many different
different activities and programs to our kingdom that will greatly increase
the amount of fun available to all. The least we can do as hosts is to make
her trip more affordable.
I have no doubt that there are other things that fundraising monies
could buy and other ways of raising funds. As always, I am very interested
in what options we Atlantians might invent to help make our Kingdom grow and
stay strong. Please drop me a line if you have some thoughts that you would
like to share.
A big thank you to all who have helped with this new fundraiser. I
hope everyone has fun with it and gets some neat stuff to use at future
events.
Your Humble Servant,
Baroness Beatrice von Staufen
